What is our Elopement Protocol

Direct Care staff will notify the lead on shift immediately.

Lead staff will direct two assigned staff via radio to complete a perimeter check around the outside of the care home.

If all residents are in the home, after completing one more head count, the lead staff should notify home manager/on call support that all residents are accounted for.

Lead staff will direct the remaining staff in the home to complete a head count.

The lead staff is to contact:

Home Manager immediately Monday through Friday between 7 am and 11 pm and Saturday and Sunday between 7 am and 7:30 pm to report suspected elopement.

  • On call support outside of these hours to report suspected elopement.
  • Post in the home’s teams group.
  • Lead staff should have the following information ready to be shared with home manager/on call support/teams:
  • Last verified time that the missing person was seen
  • What were they wearing
  • What direction did they go when they eloped
  • Was the missing person talking about what they wanted or where they wanted to go before elopement
  • Do they have any money
  • Do they have favorite places to go
  • Family/friends in the area
  • Anything else you think might be relevant to the search.
  • If all residents are in the home, after completing one more head count, the lead staff should notify home manager/on call support that all residents are accounted for.
  • If a resident is missing
  • Staff are to complete a deep check, checking all areas of the home.
  • Get their van on the road to start checking. 


Once the home manager/on call support is notified of the missing person

  • Contact Supervisor or upper manager on call.
  • Supervisor or upper manager on call will provide the next steps. 

Upper manager on call or Supervisor will

  • Call the program directors to initiate the elopement response protocol (see chart below).
