What are an employee's responsibilities when they are absent from duty?

(1)  A Public Service employee must not be absent from duty unless reasonable cause is shown.

(2)  If a Public Service employee is absent from duty because of illness or other emergency, the employee must, as soon as practicable, provide an explanation for the absence.

(3)  If the Public Service employee fails to provide that explanation to the satisfaction of the agency head, the agency head is to cause to be deducted from the pay of the employee the amount paid to the employee for the period of absence.

(4)  This clause does not prevent any other action being taken under section 69 of the Act in relation to a Public Service employee who is absent from duty without authorised leave.

What is a good opening for an interview?

• introducing assessors 

• giving a brief overview of the role and organisation 

• explaining how the interview will be run (e.g. timing, number and style of questions, that you will be taking notes, opportunity to ask questions at the end) 

• tips for interviewees (e.g. suggest using a structure for their responses such as STAR – Situation, Task, Action, Result or SAO – Situation, Action, Outcome)

Are casual employees eligible for extended leave entitlements?

Schedule 1 applies to Public Service employees other than persons employed in casual employment. This clause is subject to Schedule 4 to the Act.

4 years within any continuous period of 5 years.

When reviewing a resume, consider: 

• relevance of education, skills and work experience to the current role 

• evidence of an individual’s impact, contributions and accomplishments while in the role.

(b)  an officer or employee of either House of Parliament or any officer or employee under the separate control of the President or Speaker, or under their joint control,

(c)  persons employed under the Members of Parliament Staff Act 2013,

(d)  staff of the Independent Commission Against Corruption employed under the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act 1988,

(e)  staff of the Audit Office employed under the Government Sector Audit Act 1983,

(f)  staff of the Judicial Commission employed under the Judicial Officers Act 1986.

Yes, with a few conditions.

What are some key tips for developing behavioural interview questions?

Behavioural interview questions should: 

• be capability-based, allowing you to assess behaviours expected for the role 

• be realistic 

• be clear, brief and unambiguous 

• be open-ended 

• use past tense – e.g. “How did you…?”, “Tell us about a time when…” 

• ask for facts, not a candidate’s feeling or opinion about something 

• ask about practical situations, not hypothetical (how they think they might behave) 

• be outcomes focused.
