Most maps have a small feature that tells you how distance on the map compares to real-life distance — for example, showing that one inch equals 100 miles. What is this map feature called? And what do we call the little symbol that shows which way is North?

The scale (or map scale) shows distance. The symbol pointing North is the compass rose.

A pizza has a radius of 6 inches. Using π ≈ 3.14, what is the circumference (the distance all the way around the crust)? Round to the nearest whole inch.

38 inches (C = 2 × π × r = 2 × 3.14 × 6 = 37.68 ≈ 38)

Given the expression 2x + 3y, find its value when x = 5 and y = 4. Substitute the numbers in for the letters, then simplify.

22 (2 × 5 = 10, plus 3 × 4 = 12, so 10 + 12 = 22)

A student thinks plants grow taller with music playing. She sets up two identical plants, plays music for one and not the other, and measures them each week. Which plant is the control, and what is the variable being tested?

In a parallelogram, opposite angles are equal and all four angles add up to 360°. One angle measures 110°. What are the measures of the other three angles?

110°, 70°, and 70° (the opposite angle is also 110°; the other pair are each 70° since 360 − 110 − 110 = 140, split evenly)

Maria is 3 years older than twice her brother's age. Maria is 15. If we let b stand for her brother's age, the equation is 2b + 3 = 15. Solve for b to find her brother's age.

b = 6 (subtract 3 → 2b = 12, then divide by 2 → b = 6)

  • Skeletal system — supports and gives the body its shape, and protects organs (bones).

A cardboard box is 5 cm long, 4 cm wide, and 3 cm tall. First find its volume. Then find its total surface area (the area of all 6 faces added together).

Volume = 60 cm³ (5 × 4 × 3). Surface area = 94 cm² — the three pairs of faces are 2(5×4) + 2(5×3) + 2(4×3) = 40 + 30 + 24 = 94.

Two numbers add up to 20, and their difference is 4. Find both numbers.

x = 12 and y = 8 (add the two equations: Written as equations: x + y = 20 and x − y = 4. 2x = 24, so x = 12; then 12 + y = 20, so y = 8)

Both animal and plant cells have many parts in common, like a nucleus and a cell membrane. But plant cells have two important structures that animal cells do not have. Name both structures, and explain what each one does.

Plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts that animal cells lack.

  • The cell wall is a stiff outer layer that gives the plant cell structure and support (which is part of why plants can stand up straight).
  • Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll and are where photosynthesis happens — they capture sunlight to make the plant's food.
