On August 23, 1989 people from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia joined hands to form a human chain spanning around 650 kilometers from Vilnius to Riga and Tallinn. It was a peaceful political demonstration that expressed Baltic unity and desire for independence. People were getting there however they can - walking on foot, bikes, cars. Buses were driving people to areas where population is low to fill in the gaps in the chain. There was a small plane flying above demonstrators dropping flowers.
