Guess Who?
The people to live in what is now New York City. They were part of a large group who spoke the same language and lived along the eastern coast of North America.

The Haudenosaunee, the People of the Longhouse, came to New York State after the Algonquians. They were the most powerful and successful people in New York.
Who were the Iroquois?
When the five nations were separate but lived under one system of law. They became a league of nations that never fought each other again.

They are the leader of a group of families who were chosen because of their skills and talents. They settles quarrels and punished wrongdoers.

A bark hut made of trees. Wooden stakes were were driven into the ground and the tops were bent over and tied with a cord.
What is a wigwam?
Each nation had a special name that related to where it lived. The Mohawk, Oneidas, Onondoga, Cayuga and Seneca.
Who were the five nations of the Haudenosaunee?
During the spring the Iroquois women would collect sap from the trees. They would boil the sap into syrup and make candy by hardening the syrup on the snow. When the sap began to flow they celebrated.
What was the Maple Festival?
A meeting held of village councilmen to give advice and help come to an agreement when the village faced a problem.
What is a powwow?
Sharing and caring.Every member of the village was part of the same family; they all shared what they had and looked after one another.
What are the values of the Algonquians?
It was a symbol of family, peace, order and community.
What was the longhouse?
Later in the spring the women would plant crops. The woman planted corn ,squash and beans.
What was the Three Sisters?
Spirits that are in animals, plants, mountains and rivers. They taught the Algonquians how to build houses, grow corn and start cooking fires.
Who are the manitous?
Deer, wild turkey and duck were hunted, fish were caught and the women grew corn, pumpkin and squash in their garden
What did the Algonquians eat?
A group of two or more longhouse families that were named after animals. The most common were the wolf, Turtle and Bear.
What is a clan?
The three Sisters were ready to be eaten by August. During four days of celebration, by giving thanks there was a Thanksgiving speech and they would feast on corn soup and succotash.
What was the Green Corn Festival?
A spiritual leader who had the important job of making friends with the manitous; they communicated via dreams or visions.

Before their twelfth birthday, boys were sent into the forest waiting for his helper whom would help him for the est of his life.

Based on the Iroquois story of creation, Sky woman gave birth to a daughter who gave birth to twins sons. one was the "Good Mind" and the other "Crooked Mind". The Good Mind created people and the good things in life, where the Crooked Mind made troubling things.
