One of the earliest structural Hindu temples that survives is at Deogarh. It, too, reflects a highly developed iconographic and ritual program. The relief sculptures on the exterior of the temple suggest the different facets of the god, _______'s, identity: first dreaming the world into existence; teaching men right behavior; and finally saving devotees while destroying their enemies. On the doorway are images of River _______, the Yamuna and the Ganges. Their placement suggests a "crossing over" from the mundane world in the the sacred world of the temple sanctum, known as garbhagriha in Sanskrit, literally meaning "womb-house".
