Steps to proper hand washing

1. Turn on water and adjust temperature for your comfort. 

2. Wet hands and apply manufacturer’s recommended amount of soap to hands. 

3. Lather well (soap reduces surface tension enabling the removal of bacteria). 

4. Clean fingernail area (bacteria may be harbored beneath fingernails). 

5. Wash hands thoroughly, using rigorous scrubbing action for at least 15 seconds. Work lather around fingernails, top of hands, etc. (to facilitate eradication of all bacteria). 

6. Rinse hands and wrists under running water. 

7.Dry hands with clean paper towel. (Multiple use towels, i.e., rolling towels, are not recommended for healthcare facilities.) 

8. Turn off faucets with used paper towel and discard.

9. Avoid using hot water for hand-hygiene. Repeated use of hot water may increase the healthcare worker’s risk of dermatitis.

Steps of a surgical hand scrub

1. Remove all jewelry from hands and forearms. 

2. Don a surgical mask.

3. Adjust water temperature.

4. Keep arms level and well away from body and hands up above elbows for duration of scrub.

5. Wet hands and forearms. Wash with soap and water if visibly soiled.

6. Clean nails and subungual areas with disposable nail cleaner, under running water. Discard nail cleaner in receptacle.

7. Rinse hands and arms thoroughly.

8. Scrub hands and forearms with surgical hand scrub using a soft non-abrasive sponge. Apply according to manufacturer's instructions.

9. Your arm, hand and fingers each have four (4) sides. Wash/Scrub all four (4) sides of your arms, hands and each finger as efficiently as possible in the timeframe defined by the surgical hand scrub manufacturer.

10. Discard sponge into sink or waste receptacle.

11. Rinse hands and arms thoroughly, keeping hands raised above elbows and away from surgical scrubs.

12. Turn off water, using knee control.

13.Proceed to OR, keeping hands above the elbows and out from scrub clothes.

14. Dry hands and arms with a sterile towel in the OR using sterile technique.
