Writers Gotta Write
This phase of the writing process includes brainstorming, listing, and free-writing.
What is pre-writing?
Using someone else’s words or ideas without citing them in the draft of your essay.
What is plagiarism?
You, your, and yours make up this point of view, and it isn’t encouraged in academic writing.
What is second person?
Goes at the end of the introduction and sums up the point of your essay.
What is a thesis statement or claim?
You attack a person's personal traits instead of his or her argument.
What is ad homenim?
This phase of the writing process includes fixing major issues (including content and structure) and sometimes requires authors to write whole passages over again.
What is revision?
This goes in alphabetical order with hanging indent.
What is a works cited entry?
When you squish two words together and join them with an apostrophe. Don't do it in academic writing!
What is a contraction?
Goes at the top of each paragraph, summarizing the point of the paragraph.
What is a topic sentence?
You asserted something is true simply because it is a popular belief.
What is bandwagon or ad populum?
This phase of the process—which people often consider the most grueling—is about sitting down and writing.
What is drafting?
You don’t need to cite the information if it’s this.
What is common knowledge?
I, Me, My, Mine make up this point of view, and it isn’t encouraged in academic writing.
What is first person?
Does not rehash previous points or bring up new ones; instead, it allows for exceptions and qualifiers.
What is a conclusion?
You picked a fight with an argument nobody actually makes.
This phase of the writing process includes changing word choice, spotting grammatical errors, and fixing punctuation.
What is editing?
This should contain the page number, or the title of the article/webpage.
What is the ending citation or parenthetical citation?
This “attention getter” works well in a speech, but not in an essay. Just make statements!
What is a question?
This begins broad and gets narrower.
What is the introduction?
Circular reasoning; you assumed the answer before you asked the question. "Cigarettes are deadly. Why? Because they kill you."
What is begging the question?
This is the most difficult part of the essay to craft; you should probably write it last.
What is the conclusion?
This should come before the source material and contain the first & last name of the author, as well as the title of the work.
What is the signal tag or signal phrase?
We, us, our, and ours make up this point of view, and it isn’t encouraged in academic writing.
What is first person plural or first person collective?
This lends credibility to your claim. Generally, it comes someplace in the middle of a body paragraph.
What is support?
You said Z was caused by Y simply because Y comes before Z.
