True or False?

The full stop was originally painted in red ink by medieval monks to symbolize a "stop drop of blood," which is why teachers traditionally use red pens to grade papers today.

Monks did use red ink (a process called rubrication), but they used it for titles, initial capital letters, and religious feast days to make them stand out on the page. The full stop was just black ink, and teachers use red pens simply because it contrasts sharply against a student's blue or black writing.

FALSE!

While Romans loved blocky capital letters for monuments, lowercase letters didn't exist at all yet! For centuries, people wrote entirely in what we now call uppercase. The exclamation mark was around long before Shakespeare, appearing in the 14th century. It was originally called the punctum admirativus (point of admiration). It actually evolved from the Latin word for joy, Io, written with the 'I' on top of the 'o'. Over time, the 'I' stretched into a line and the 'o' shrank into a dot!
