professor : Is it okay to break the law if you think the law is unfair?

student 1 : I break the law all the time, usually without even realizing, and you all do.Only regarding knowingly breaking the law, I don't see breaking the law as having an inherent negative moral weight. Specific laws, sure. But many more are unjust, and breaking those has a positive moral weight.

student 2 : Legally speaking, you’re still on the hook for the consequences because the government doesn't see "unfairness" as a valid excuse. However, history is full of people who followed their conscience over the rules, arguing that if a law is truly wrong, the moral thing to do is peacefully break it and own the outcome.
