Learning from Fossils
Extinct and Living Things

Ch.2 Review
100

What does it mean when an animal is extinct and when it is endangered?

Extinct: A species that has died off (ie dinosour)

Endangered: A species that has so few members that the entire species is at risk of dying out (ie black rhino)

100

What is a 'fossil'?

A fossil is a preserved remain of an organism that lived long ago or an imprint made by the organism

100

How many elephants are living today?

2; the Asian elephant and African elephant

100
A place where many trees grow close together is called a what?

A forest

100

The struggle between organisms for resources is called what?

Competition

200

How can a species become extinct?

When its environment changes or maybe through natural causes of extinction such as not being able to compete for food, earthquakes, fires, human destruction, or volcanic eruptions

200

What is a Paleontologist?

A scientist who studies fossils to learn about organisms that were once alive

200

What is an "Ancestor"?

An ancestor is a form of a species that lived long ago and for which modern species may be traced back (ie mammoth)

200

A behavior or body part that helps a living thing survive in its environment is called a/an

Adaptation.

200

Tell me three different ways humans cause pollution

- Oil Spills

- Littering

-Smoke

300
What are some human threats that cause extinctions?

Hunters killed too many, people might have brought species from other places into an area, and people changed or destroyed their habitat.

300

Older fossils are usually found where?

Found buried deeper than recent fossils

300

What is a "trait"?

A trait is a feature such as a body part or a behavior. (ie. large ears in elephants)

300

You find a skeleton of an animal in a museum and it ha sharp teeth and long claws. What do you think it eats?

Long claws and sharp teeth are often adaptions for eating meat. The teeth allow biting, and the claws allow the animal to hold it in place.

300

Changes to an environment such as fire, flood, or drought can be good or bad for the environment. Give me 2 ways these can be good for the environment.

- After a flood, when the water dries up, nutrient rich soil is left behind

- After a fire, new habitats can be cleared away and also wood ash contains nutrients that help new plants grow

400

What is a 'species'?

It is a group of the same type of living thing that can mate and produce other living things of the same kind (ie. all humans are one type of species: humans!)

400

The geological time scale is divided into what?

Eras

400

If an animal today looks like an extinct animal, are the animals related?

in some cases, living animals are related to the extinct animals they look like, but not always!!

400

List some of the adaptations a seal needs to live in an aquatic habitat

Seal needs flippers, a thick layer of fat, and eyes and nose by the top of its head

400

What are three things animals can compete over? Give me an example in each

Space, Food, Water.

500
How can you save a species that is endangered because of hunting?

Obey laws that say not to hunt endangered animals, do not buy foods or products that harm endangered animals. Write letters to voice how you want protection for these endangered animals!!

500
If I find a fossil that looks like a fish on a mountain, what can you guess about the mountain?

We can guess that the mountain was at some point under water

500

Many scientist believe living birds might have dinosaur ancestors TRUE OR FALSE

TRUE

500

Tundra, Desert, Grassland, Forest, Ocean are different habitats. Tell me a description of each of them and an example of an animal/plant that lives there.

Tundra: a cold treeless area (Arctic Fox)

Desert: an area that receives less than 25 cm of rain in a year (Tortoise, cactus)

Grassland: a flat large area covered with grass (Lion)

Forest: A place where trees grow close together (Deer)

Ocean: salty large body of water (Shark)

What would happen to sea birds of there was an ocean oil spill near a coast?  How can it effect two other animal populations.

If sea birds got oil on their feathers, it would be hard for them to stay warm and dry, fly and swim. Their population might decrease. The population of fish that the sea birds eat would increase
