Cars are one of the biggest contributors towards Air Pollution. What can we do to help this?
Carpool, Walk, Make traveling by bicycle easier and safer.
What is an example of Water Pollution?
Trash in water
Chemicals in water
Waste in water
Too many nutrients
What is Composting?
Composting is when you decompose food waste, leaves, or grass clippings in order to make nutrient-rich soil.
What is an example of Climate Pollution?
Carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels
Methane from landfills and agriculture
These trap heat in the atmosphere and make the planet warmer over years and decades.
What is Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling?
Reducing = Using only what you need, and less of things you use.
Reusing = Using again items.
Recycling = Creating something new out of old items.
What is something that will decrease the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?
Planting more trees.
What do we use to clean our water to make it safe to drink or use again?
Filters, Sewage Treatment centers, Septic Systems.
Composting means piling up grass and leaves so they can be allowed to gradually decompose. What is the biggest impact that composting has on land?
A decrease in the amount of land used for landfills
Why do we need to find an alternative to fossil fuels?
Because fossil fuels can put bad things into the air, like particulate matter.
Urbanization is caused by an increase in population. What is an effect of urbanization on land?
This causes more land to be used to build houses. This can take away homes from animals and plants.
What is particulate matter, and why might it make it hard for plants to go through photosynthesis?
Particulate matter makes it hard for plants to go through photosynthesis by coating leaf surfaces, which physically blocks sunlight, and plugs stomata (pores), preventing sunlight from coming in.
How can building dams be both good and bad for the environment?
Dams can be good as they provide renewable energy, control floods, and store water for us. They can be bad because they block fish migration, harm biodiversity, and destroy habitats of animals.
What is Soil Erosion? Give one reason it happens.
Soil erosion is the wearing away/taking away of the top layer of soil. It occurs through natural forces like water and wind, or by human activities such as farming, deforestation, and construction.
What is the difference between Climate and Air Pollution?
Air Pollution: How dirty the air is right now and how it impacts health today or this week.
Climate Pollution: Long-term changes to Earth’s temperature and climate rather than how the air feels right now.
A new law requires that all newspapers in the nation to use recycled paper. This law will means that 500,000 trees each week will be saved. Is this effect positive, or negative, and what impact will it have on the nation's forests?
Positive: biodiversity will increase.
Photochemical smog is caused when nitrogen and carbon react in sunlight. Which describes a way humans can decrease the amount of photochemical smog?
A) Pass laws to eliminate CFCs.
B) Use sources of energy other than fossil fuels.
C) Increase the amount of particulate matter in the air.
D) Decrease the amount of ozone in the atmosphere.
B) Use sources of energy other than fossil fuels.
What is it called whenever Fertilizer runs off into water?
Eutrophication.
What can deforestation (the cutting down of trees) lead to?
Soil Erosion, increasing temperatures, less Oxygen, loss of animal habitats.
What are some solutions for Climate Pollution?
Renewable energy (solar, wind)
Driving less / electric cars
Planting trees
Recycling and composting
Using less electricity
Protecting forests
Reducing food waste
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a large area of floating trash in the Pacific Ocean that is caused, in part, by ocean currents. Which is a step people can take to minimize its effect on Earth's water?
A) Use satellites to measure its size.
B) Measure ocean currents to predict where it will go
C) Design new and better ways to recycle.
D) Work harder to prevent oil spills.
C) Design new and better ways to recycle.
How does the AQI work?
The higher the score, the more pollution you will have.
What is Eutrophication, and why is it bad?
Eutrophication is when there are too many nutrients in water. It causes Algae to grow, and can take in too much oxygen from the lake, killing the fish.
A student notices that, after a rainstorm, muddy water washes through her backyard and into a pond. What is something that most likely caused this problem?
There is not a lot of shrubs or trees that are there to block the water. Perhaps some of them were removed.
Give me two things that Happen When Climate Pollution Increases.
Rising global temperatures
Melting glaciers
Rising sea levels
Stronger storms
Droughts
Wildfires
Harm to animals and plants
Loss of biodiversity
What is a landfill?
