The two main types of clouds that form low in the atmosphere, that is, below 6,500 feet, are cumulus and stratus. Stratus clouds develop horizontally, whereas cumulus clouds are formed vertically. Stratus clouds are flat, uniformly gray in appearance, and tend to fill the sky with layers of gloom. White, fluffy cumulus clouds, on the other hand, often float in a bright blue sky and have been called "fair weather clouds." Unlike stratus clouds, cumulus clouds are individual structures. They're flat on the bottom and more puffy toward the top. Given the right conditions in the atmosphere, cumulus clouds may also turn dark with rain, signaling the coming of a thunderstorm.

The paragraph below is from a writer’s informational essay for social studies class. Read the paragraph and the directions that follow.

The Maasai people live near the Rift Valley in Kenya and Tanzania, which are countries in eastern Africa. The Maasai are divided into many different clans, or groups. They still practice the rituals of their ancient ancestors. Many of these ceremonies are rites of passage. One of the first rituals in the life of a Maasai is the naming ceremony. It might not take place until the child is as old as three years. The ceremony begins with the mother and child coming out of seclusion. Then their heads are shaved, a common practice in many Maasai rites of passage. After two days, the mother and other Maasai women select a name for the child. They base the name on the personality the child has shown. As the child matures, he or she will celebrate other rites of passage.

Select the sentence that is unnecessary and should be removed from the paragraph.

Fluoride is a mineral that is added to public drinking water supplies in much of the United States in order to reduce levels of tooth decay. When a tooth is forming, fluoride strengthens the enamel, or outside coating of the teeth. The fluoride mixes with the enamel, making it harder. In addition, when fluoride mixes with saliva, it can protect teeth from sugars, further reducing tooth decay. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that drinking fluoridated water provides additional protection even for people who simply brush with fluoride toothpaste. Reports on the impacts of fluoridated drinking water have concluded that it reduces tooth decay by about twenty-five percent.

A special type of vote called a "popular referendum" gives voters the opportunity to cancel a law passed by their legislature. It's available to voters in twenty-four states. After the state legislature approves a law, voters can circulate a referendum petition. They must collect a specified number of voters' signatures within a certain number of days—generally ninety—and deliver them to a designated state official, usually the secretary of state. The official then must review and verify that the petition contains a sufficient number of valid signatures of registered voters. Once the signatures are certified, the referendum is placed on the ballot in a statewide election. At that point, the voters decide whether to approve or disapprove the law. If they disapprove it, it never goes into effect.

A disposable plastic water bottle may not look like a major threat to the environment, but chances are it will end up taking up space in a landfill—or in the ocean. Americans buy and discard about twenty-nine billion of these bottles per year, so all that waste really adds up. One of the easiest methods to reduce your use of plastic water bottles is to carry a reusable bottle and refill it with tap water. And if you do buy bottled water, recycle the bottle.

5. Read the statement below.

The author of this passage has great respect for the scientists and farmers who have made gene banks possible.

How can you tell this statement is true? Use two details from the text to support your answer.

Readers can tell this statement is true because the author says only good things about gene banks and the scientists and farmers who have built them. She says that what’s in the Svalbard gene bank is “worth more than gold.” She also says that thanks to the scientists and farmers who have created gene banks, “the food supply for seven billion people is safer than it ever was before.”

11. Read the following poem about October:

October is the lovely girl who draws her sister's envy:

Mild in temper, fair of heart, and much admired by many.

Her sisters dress more modestly, but she is always bold,

clothed in red and violet, crowned with green and gold.

One theme of "The Scent of Memory" is that autumn is a special time year with plentiful harvest and beautiful colors. The poem also shares this theme. Compare and contrast how "The Scent of Memory" and the poem present the theme stated above. Use detail from the texts to support your answer.

In “The Scent of Memory,” this theme is shown through the narrator’s memories of an autumn day. He describes how it’s apple harvest time and how his family has been eating all kinds of foods made from apples. He also describes the beautiful colors outside: “orange, red, yellow, and even greens that are bright and playful.” In the poem, this theme is not shown through a character’s memories. Instead, the speaker turns the month of October into a human-like character. October is called “the lovely girl” who is “much admired.” She is also described as “clothed in red and violet, crowned with green and gold” because of all the changing leaves.
