Revolutions: America Vs France
Compare & Contrast

Similar:

  1. Fighting for Freedom: Both revolutions aimed to overthrow oppressive rulers—American colonies fought against British control 🇬🇧, and the French people challenged their absolute monarchy 🇫🇷.
  2. Inspired by Enlightenment Ideas: Both were influenced by thinkers like John Locke, who emphasized rights like liberty and equality 🗽.
  3. New Governments: Both led to creating new political systems—America got a constitution, and France moved towards democracy (more chaotic though).

Differences:

Who They Fought

- American Rev: Colonists vs. an external power (Britain).

- French Rev: Citizens vs. their own government (lots of internal turmoil).

Goals

- America: Independence for the colonies.

- France: Equality among classes and ending feudal oppression.

Violence Levels

- The French Revolution had more extreme violence (like the Reign of Terror with guillotines 🔪😲).

- The American Revolution involved battles but was less brutal overall.

Outcomes

- The U.S. created a stable democracy relatively quickly.

- In France, things were messy with Napoleon taking power later.

-Colonists were mad about being taxed by Britain without having any representation in British Parliament ("No taxation without representation!").

- Examples: Stamp Act, Tea Tax—these unfair taxes sparked rebellion.

- In France, the Third Estate (common people) paid most of the taxes, but they had no real political power. Meanwhile, the wealthy nobles and clergy were barely taxed at all—super unfair!

How was the American Government set up to protect american citizens?

1. Three Branches of Government

- Legislative (Congress): Makes laws. - Executive (President): Enforces laws, but with limited power. - Judicial (Supreme Court): Interprets laws to ensure fairness.

This "separation of powers" ensures no branch becomes too powerful.

2. Checks and Balances

- Each branch can "check" the others to keep things balanced.

3. Constitution and Bill of Rights

- The Constitution is like the rules for running the government. - The Bill of Rights protects freedoms like speech, religion, and press, so no leader can take them away.

4. Elections

- Leaders (even the President) are elected by the people, not inherited like a king's throne. - Power is temporary—Presidents serve a max of two 4-year terms.

By doing all this, they made sure we wouldn’t accidentally end up with another “King George” situation!
