A Firsthand account is based off the observation of one person. The reader only learns about what that one person sees, thinks, hears. Examples of firsthand accounts include diaries, letters, and autobiographies. They often include pronouns such as I, me, and we.

A secondhand account is when the author researches events and writes about them. Secondhand accounts are not personal. They can be less accurate because they are written after events that happen and not written by someone who was present during that time. Secondhand accounts use pronouns such as he, she, and they.
