7/8 is larger primarily because eighths are smaller than fifths. This would mean that 7/8 is closer to being one whole than 4/5 is. Also, both 7/8 and 4/5 are one unit fraction away from being a whole. 7/8 is a smaller unit fraction from the whole; therefore, it is going to be larger than 4/5 because it doesn't have much "space" left before it becomes a whole.
