All of these things are part of the earth, but they are all land.  The fact is that almost all of the surface of the earth is water.  The water on the earth covers two times as much surface as the land.  Can you see why most people used boats for travel long ago before airplanes were invented?

A giant clothespin is in the center of Philadelphia and is higher than a four-story building. It is made of steel and weighs as much as five automobiles.  Of course, the giant clothespin is not used to hang clothes.  It is a monument.  The artist Claes Oldenburg made the structure.

Why do people have home gardens?  What do people plant in them?  Most people who plant home gardens do so because they want the best fruits and vegetables.  They also want to save money and have fun.  The one plant most people grow is the tomato.  Almost all home gardens grow the tomato.  Many people also grow beans, peas, and lettuce.  Many other vegetables are also grown in home gardens.  Not as many fruits are grown.  The three fruits most people grow are tomatoes, strawberries, and apples.

The 1889 World's Fair was held in paris, France.  The planners of the fair wanted to get everyone's attention.  They requested the help of ALexander Eiffel, a bridge builder.  He built a tower of iron bars 984 feet tall. It was called the Eiffel Tower.  The visitors to the fair were thrilled. 

You can tell that

A true native North American fruit, the little red cranberry, was growing in this country even before the Native Americans were here, according to legend.  Medicine men collected wild cranberries to use in the treatment of their patients.  According to folklore, the cranberry also was used as part of the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621.  Cranberry cultivation was first recorded in 1816, in the town of Dennis on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  Massachusetts still grows more cranberries than any other state.

Americans today spend a lot of time washing, but their pursuit of cleanliness pales in comparison to the ancient Romans.  Dry skin and dry hair were considered dirty by the ancient Romans, so they bathed and moisturized more than once a day.  What they used for bathing is even more interesting- olive oil.  People bathed with olive oil at least three times daily or coated themselves with it and skimmed the excess off with a stick called a struggle.  In order to protect their skin from dirt and cold, they left a thin film of oil on their bodies. 

What did not cause the Romans to bathe with olive oil?

Tin cans are not pure tin.  The can itself is made from a thin sheet of steel or iron.  The steel or iron is then coated with tin.  There are two methods of coating.  One is the hot-dip method.  The other is the electrolytic method.  The tin coat protects the steel or iron against rusting.  Another kind of metal that is often protected by a thin tin plate is copper wire.  Pure tin would cost too much money.  Tin plates do the job at a lower cost.

When the Rojas' new collie Ranger began shedding more than usual in May, it didn't surprise them. They figured he was getting rid of his winter coat in preparation for the warm summer weather.  When he bagan shedding again that fall they were puzzled until they spoke with their veterinarian.  She told them that some breeds, such as shelties and collies are double coated.  They have a tough protective overcoat as well as a soft insulating undercoat.  They lose large quantities of fur during the spring and during the fall when they change their coat for the new season.
