What is meant by innovation / un-Islamic custom?
An innovation is defined as something new
and different. In the context of religion an
innovation can be recognized as something
new and different that moves away from the
teachings of the Holy Quran.
Is the use of dholak permitted?
Yes The use of Dholak is permitted but do not partake in wrong traditions.
Is distributing Mithai (confectionary) at an engagement allowed?
“Sweets are distributed at engagement ceremonies to celebrate an alliance / a union, for the purpose of notifying other people and the community at large, as to avoid any problems later.
Should Sound Systems be used for songs?
No Sayyedna Huzoor Anwar (aba) stated: “In the permission that I gave for the rituals of Mehndi to be inside the four walls of the house and just with the friends of the bride, it should be considered that the voices should not be so high that they reach outside the house. I have found out that now-a-days, stereo systems are also being used. No sound system should be used at the occasions of weddings. The voice should not reach outside the house.
Is it allowed for ladies to dance amongst ladies at weddings?
No It is not allowed for ladies to dance at all.
Is it okay to have Bridesmaids or Groomsmen(shahbala)?
No This is not an Islamic Custom.This has been derived from other cultures like Christianity and Hinduism.
Is it permissible for the father to bring his daughter down the aisle on the wedding day?
No Father bringing daughter down the aisle is un Islamic because it affects the pardah of other ladies present in the hall. It is also a Christian tradition.
Is Presenting milk to groom (Doodh Pilai) and hiding groom’s shoes an un-Islamic Custom?
Yes “Some other bad practices such as presenting milk to the groom and hiding his shoes should be ceased and caution every member of the Jama’at that if I receive any complain of someone about these practices in the future then punitive action will be taken against them.”
Should Mehndi be done as a tradition?
No Mehndi should not be done as a tradition.Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V aba stated: “There is the Mehndi ceremony. People have started given the same significance as the actual wedding. Invitation cards are printed, stages are prepared and series of parties continue for many days prior to the wedding. Sometimes even weeks before the wedding they have these parties. I have recently drawn attention that we should desist from extravagance and lavish dinners at the Mehndi ceremony. Now I am openly stating that these idle rituals and ceremonies should not be followed and should be brought to an end.”
Is bridal shower and cake cutting an Un-Islamic wedding custom?
NO Bridal shower before weddings and Cake Cutting at weddings are customs borrowed from the West. They are also prohibited because they can become a source of Bid’at (innovation in the faith), which has been forbidden by the Promised Messiah (as)
