Read the passages below:

Passage 1:

I snuck into the classroom as quietly as I could and made my way to my seat in the back. Yes, I knew I was late. Yes, I knew I was still dripping water from the rain outside. I felt the eyes of my classmates staring at me, judging me. I even felt Ms. Joy's judgemental eyes. She was probably thinking about how to best draw attention to my tardiness. I sat down and put my head on my desk, already hoping the day would be over.

Passage 2:

Cassandra snuck into the classroom quietly, and for a split second heads turned and judged her. Then their eyes snapped back to the board where Ms. Joy was explaining how far away things were in the universe.

"Light is the fastest thing in the universe," she said as she quickly changed Cassandra's A for absent to a T for tardy on the attendance sheet. "But even light takes eight minutes to get from the sun to Earth. So the sunlight coming through the windows is actually eight minutes old." As she spoke, she made a mental note to herself to check in with Cassandra and make sure she was OK. It was unusual for the girl to have her head down in science class.

A student is writing an opinion essay for the class about fashion. The student wants to revise the draft to improve the organization. Read the draft of the essay and complete the task that follows.

I like to look nice, but it is more important that my clothes are comfortable. When I get dressed for an event, I will choose something that feels good, like my favorite soft pink sweater. Emma disagrees with me. She likes to feel fancy and special when she gets dressed. I feel good when I am comfortable, but she says that she feels sure of herself when she knows that she looks nice. She tells me often that I am not dressed up enough to go where we are going. When we get home though, I still feel comfortable. On the other hand, Emma complains about her feet hurting or her neck itching. Then, she changes into her cozy pajamas. At least we can agree on pajamas.

A student is writing a report for class about sharks. The student wants to revise the draft to better introduce the topic. Read the following paragraph from the report and complete the task that follows.

People typically think that sharks harm humans on purpose. Unless you are watching a movie where the shark is the villain, this is just not true. Sharks are very curious animals. They like to check out their surroundings. Sharks do not have hands to touch and hold the things they investigate, so they use their teeth like hands! In many cases, sharks will confuse a human for a seal. This may sound silly to you, but if you are swimming towards a surfboard from underwater, you might see how it can be a very misleading angle.

B. Sharks are quite often misunderstood creatures.

C. Sharks are dangerous creatures that often attack humans.

D. Sharks do not make good pets and should not be held captive.
