If fact, they come from oysters, a type of shellfish. Any oyster lived inside a hard, sealed shell. when a grain of sand slips inside the shell, the oyster considers the sand an intruder. In order to protect itself, it produces a substance that covers over the grain of sand. Over time, the substance hardens and becomes the gem we know as the beautiful pearl.
