What is the smallest unit of matter called?

An atom

100

Name Earth's four spheres.

Hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, geosphere

100

Which variable do we change?

Independent

100

What role does a tree play in a food web?

It is a producer

Imagine you gently roll a ball across the floor.  Eventually, the ball comes to a stop without running into any other objects.

What force caused the ball to stop on its own?

Friction

Give one example of how you know particles too small to see exist.

Example: I can see the wind blowing the swings on the playground, so I know something must be pushing the swings even though I can't see it.

200

Draw a diagram showing how a person could see a cat.

An arrow should be draw from a light source to the cat, then another arrow should go from the cat to the person.

200

Dependent variable

The data that is being collected at the end of each trial.

200

Where does all energy in a food web originate?

The sun

200

What is called when an animal changes to better survive in an environment

Adaptation

300

What is the Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter?

Matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

300

Draw a diagram showing the direction of Earth's gravitational pull.

Diagrams should show gravity pulling objects toward the center of Earth.

Students want to know how water temperature will affect how much sugar will dissolve.  Identify the IV, DV, and at least 2 constants.

IV: water temperature

DV: how much sugar will dissolve

CVs (examples): amount of water, amount of sugar, stirring, size and shape of container

300

Give one difference between birds and mammals.

Example: Birds have hollow bones and mammals do not.

300

In areas that are prone to drought, plants have developed a few special features.  For example, the silverleaf phacelia plant has funnel-like leaves that direct rain and dew toward its roots.

Is this adaptation more likely inherited from parents or influenced by the environment?

Influenced by the environment

400

Give an example of a mixture AND a solution.

Examples of mixtures: trail mix, Lucky Charms

Examples of solutions: hot cocoa, lemonade, saltwater

400

Why does the sun appear so much brighter than other stars?

Because it is so much closer than any other star.

Bonus points for using terms like apparent and absolute magnitude! (Just kidding....I don't know if you can have bonus points....)

400

Students set up 3 identical plants. They give each plant a different brand of fertilizer.  At the end of 2 weeks, they measure the height of each plant.

Identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and at least 2 constants.

IV: brand of fertilizer

DV: height of plant

Cvs (examples): type of plant, amount of sunlight, amount and type of soil, amount of water, starting size/condition of plant

400

Give one difference between the respiratory systems of fish and amphibians.

Example: Fish have a swim bladder, but amphibians do not.

400

Describe the change in state of matter for condensation and explain why the matter changes states this way.

Condensation is the change from a gas to a liquid due to cooling.

500

How would you separate a mixture of salt, sand, and iron filings?

1. Use a magnet to get out the iron filings.

2. Add water to the mixture and stir to dissolve the salt.

3. Pour the mixture through a filter to get out the sand.

4. Evaporate the water to leave the salt behind.

Draw a model and explain why seasons occur on Earth.

Due to the Earth's tilt, one hemisphere will receive more direct sunlight than the other hemisphere at different points during the year.  For example, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, it is receiving more direct light, so it is experiencing winter. Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere will be receiving less direct sunlight, so it would be experiencing winter.

Mrs. Pate set up the following investigation with her three classes.  All three classes are similar in size and ability.

For the first class she followed these steps:

1. Set the thermostat to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Give students math test.

3. Grade and record scores.

She then repeated this procedure at 70 degrees and 80 degrees with the other 2 classes.

Identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and at least 2 constants.

IV: temperature

DV: math test scores

CVs (examples): classroom, test and questions, class ability

500

Give one similarity and one difference between birds and reptiles.

Example: Both birds and reptiles lay eggs.  Birds are endothermic, but reptiles are ectothermic.

List the 6 types of simple machines

Pulley, lever, wedge, inclined plane, screw, wheel & axle
