You have a bowl of rocks and sand. After putting it on a scale, you find that it has a mass of 930g. Explain how you can you find the mass of the sand without the rocks or the bowl.

(you can't pour the sand on the scale)

Take out the rocks, find the new mass. Subtract from the total to find the mass of the rocks.

Dump the sand into another container, find the mass of the bowl.

Subtract the mass of the bowl and the mass of the rocks from the original mass.
