Name a stat of matter that has a definite shape and volume
Solid
Solid to a Liquid
Melting
Smooth or Rough?
Texture
What is needed to change matter from one state to another
Heat Energy
Name one atom you know of.
There are SO many :)
Hydrogen, helium, lithium, berilium, gold, silver, copper
Name a state of matter that takes the shape of its container.
Liquid and gas
Gas to a Liquid
Condensation
Shiny or Dull?
Luster (I will accept colour as an answer)
Describe what a physical change is.
A physical change are changes made to the appearance only, like a change to its shape, size and state of matter.
A physical change does NOT change what the matter is made out of, the molecules does not change.
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
Atoms are smaller than molecules. Multiple atoms combined make molecules.
Describe the appearance the atoms/molecules in a solid, liquid and gas.
Solid: Atoms are tightly packed together
Liquid: Atoms are more loosely flowing and bumping into each other
Gas: Atoms are even more spaced out and bumping into each other
Liquid to a Gas
Evaporation
Easily broken?
Brittleness
What are chemical changes?
Chemical changes are non-reversible changes that make a whole new thing.
There are clues that can tell you if a change is a chemical change.
What do you think this atomic symbol stands for
H
Hydrogen
Name a type of matter that have no definite shape or volume
Gas
Solid to a Gas.
What is one example?
Sublimation
Solid air freshener
Dry Ice
Can it bend without breaking?
Flexibility
What are the clues that tell you that there is a chemical change?
You must identify at least 4!
1) if there is burning or fire
2) new colour is formed
3) a temperature change without heating or cooling
4) a new odor/ smell
5) if there is an explosion
6) if there is a gas that is produced
What atoms make water?
Hydrogen and Oxygen
Name all of the states of matter that can flow
Liquids and gases
Describe the water cycle.
Heat from the sun causes water in rivers, oceans, puddles evaporate and float to the sky.
As the water vapor rises, the temperature decreases and gets cold. The water vapor starts to pack more closely together making clouds (condensation). Eventually the clouds fill with so much water vapor that it rains (precipitation).
Does it return to its original shape after being stretched?
Elasticity
Name 2 examples of a physical changes and 2 chemical changes.
Physical Changes: cutting paper, melting ice, chopping wood
Chemical Change: burning wood, fire works, baking a cake
Describe what the difference between atoms of ice and water are.
Both water and ice are made up of the same atoms (hydrogen and oxygen). The atoms and molecules are the exact same, except in ice, the molecules are more tightly packed together because it is a solid!
