Chris multiplies 0.05 x 0.8 on a calculator. The calculator shows a product of 0.04. Chris says the calculator must be broken because multiplying tenths by hundredths gives a product in the thousandths. Is Chris's calculator broken? Explain.
Chris's calculator is not broken. Chris thinks the product of 0.05 and 0.8 is 0.040., or 40 thousandths. This is correct. But, 0.040 is equivalent to 0.04, or 4 hundredths. So, the calculator is not broken.
Explain the process for placing a decimal in a division problem.
If there is not a decimal in the divisor, then you move the decimal point straight up from the dividend to the quotient. If there is a decimal in the divisor, you have to move it to the right to create a whole number. Then, you have to move the decimal in the dividend the same number of spaces before moving it straight up into the quotient.
