Parts of an Essay
A paragraph that get's readers engaged, presents important context information, and states the essay's thesis/ claim.
What is an introduction?
The time period, physical space and location of the story.
What is the setting?
A story about a seemingly perfect place where everyone is content, but Jonas discovers what people sacrificed to get there.
What is The Giver?
Jonas's best friend at the beginning of the book.
Who is Asher?
The state Ms. Opar is from.
The focus of the whole essay.
What is a thesis (or claim)?
The issue or problem that characters are dealing with.
What is the conflict?
A picture book we read to start understanding the idea of Utopia.
What is Weslandia?
The Giver's daughter.
Who is Rosemary?
The namesake of all of Ms. Opar's pets.
What are the Harry Potter Books?
A quote or specific detail from the source, used to support the writer's ideas.
What is evidence?
The message of a story.
What is a theme?
A story in short film about a dad struggling to help his daughter with her hair, eventually realizing all of the reasons it's so important to her.
What is Hair Love?
The term for how Jonas starts seeing color. It happened differently for The Giver.
What is "Seeing Beyond"?
The teacher at Oak Hill who went to the same High School as Ms. Opar.
Who is Ms. Sack?
This is usually 5-7 sentences long, includes an indent at the beginning, and has a sub-focus from the overall essay.
What is a body paragraph?
The part of the part of the plot where things happen as a result of the turning point.
What is the falling action?
A story about a kid with a posh, flamboyant grandmother who takes him on a trip to step outside of his comfort zone.

Issues, concepts, or things in the world that a story focuses on.
What are topics?
This story includes topics about immigration, standing up for what's right, and knowing who you are. It includes yodeling and a camping trip!
