            "What Causes An Earthquake?"

Shake! Shake! Shake! What causes an earthquake? The answer is simple. The Earth's surface is moving! The surface of the Earth, called the "crust," is not one whole piece but more like 20 pieces of a giant puzzle. Each puzzle piece is called a "plate." These plates constantly move, but very slowly (6 inches a year at most). Earthquakes occur when a plate scrapes, moves away from, or bumps into another plate. When this happens, the ground will tremble and rumble, almost as if a train was rolling through your backyard!

C. Earth’s crust is made up of 20 pieces called “plates.”

Day and Night

Why do we have day and night? It is because Earth rotates. Half of Earth always faces the sun’s light. So that half has day. Because Earth’s other half is in the dark, it is night there. As Earth moves, the dark half goes into the light and the light part goes into the dark. This day-and-night pattern happens every 24 hours.
