Why do we only see one side of the moon?

The Moon actually spins on its axis just like Earth does, but here's the key - it takes exactly the same amount of time for the Moon to rotate once as it takes to orbit around Earth once (about 27.3 days).

Imagine you're walking in a circle around a friend, but you always keep your face pointed toward them. You're rotating (turning) as you walk, but your friend only ever sees your front - never your back. That's exactly what the Moon does with Earth.
