How long does the Earth take to complete 1 rotation?

24 hours

100

How many moon phases are there?

8

100

Roughly how many high and low tides does Earth experience during a day?

2 of each

100

An eclipse is an o_____________g of light

obscuring

100

How many months are there in each season on Earth?

3 months

200

How long exactly does it take for the Earth to complete it's orbit of the sun?

365.25 days

200

Which moon phase would it be during a lunar eclipse?

Full moon. Earth is positioned directly between the sun and moon causing earths shadow to fall on the moon.

200

What causes tides on Earth?

The gravitational pull of the moon and to a lesser extent, the sun.

200

What is one similarity and one difference of umbra and penumbra?

They are both shadows that occur during an eclipse

Umbra is the darker shadow. Penumbra is the lighter shadow

200

What angle is Earth's axis tilted on?

23.5 degrees

300

How many kilometres is the Sun from the Earth?

150 000 000 km

300

List the moon phases in order starting with a NEW MOON

NEW MOON, WAXING CRESCENT, FIRST QUARTER, WAXING GIBBOUS, FULL MOON, WANING GIBBOUS, 3RD QUARTER, WANING CRESCENT.

300

Roughly how long is there between each tide change?

6 hours

300

Which eclipse is more rare to witness from Earth?

Solar eclipse because the path of the eclipse is so narrow that it is only visible to a small part of Earth.

300

Explain the difference between direct and indirect light

Direct light is concentrated energy resulting in longer daylight hours and hotter temperatures.

Indirect light is less concentrated energy resulting in shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures

400

Why do we always see the same side of the moon from Earth?

It takes the same amount of time to rotate as it does to orbit the sun, therefore we see the same side as it orbits.

400

Explain how moon phases are caused

Moon phases are caused by the position of the moon in relation to the earth and the sun. As the light from the sun hits the moon, it lights up an amount of the moon based on the position it is in it's orbit of the Earth.

400

If the last tide of the day was a low tide at 2330, predict the time of the next low tide.

The next low tide would be at approximately 1130 the following day.

400

Martin said that the lunar eclipse during the 1st quarter moon produces a darker red colour of the moon.

Do you agree or disagree with Martin? Explain why

400

Explain why Earth experiences different seasons

Explanation must discuss

- tilt of earth's axis

- direct and indirect light

- Earth's orbit of the sun

500

Explain why our calendar adds an extra day to February every 4 years

This is because the earth takes 365.25 days to orbit the sun. Every 4 years we add a day to February to make up for the 4 lots of .25 which is equal to 1 day.

500

The moon takes 28 days to complete one orbit of Earth.

A lunar month is the time from one new moon to the next new moon.

Is a lunar month longer or shorter than the orbit time? Explain why

A lunar month is longer, usually around 31 days. This is because it takes the moon slightly longer to get back into a new moon position as the Earth is orbiting the sun at the same time so the moon has to travel further to be in the new moon position.

500

Explain the position of the Earth, Moon and Sun during a neap tide, as well as which moon phases would be occuring.

The sun, moon and earth are in a perpendicular arrangement. The moon phases could be a 1st or last quarter.

500

Provide the following

- arrangement of sun moon and earth during a solar and a lunar eclipse

- possible moon phases during an eclipse

- effect on the tides during an eclipse

Solar Eclipse

Sun - Moon - Earth

New Moon

Spring Tide

Lunar Eclipse

Sun - Earth - Moon

Full Moon

If the Earth was not tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees, explain the effect this would have on seasons experienced on Earth.

Each location on Earth would only experience 1 season and this would be the same for that location all year round.
