Declaratory Act of 1766 -


A British Act that was a law stating Parliament, had the right to pass laws for the colonies in “all cases whatsoever.” Purpose: To show that they were superior to the colonies and that the colonists still had to follow the law of the king.

Boston Tea Party (1773) -  

A Colonist Act that planned an event by the Sons of Liberty to prevent the unloading of tea that arrived. Protestors dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. The British responded by closing the harbor to all of the trade that was coming in and out.

Sugar Act of 1764

A British Act that stopped the smuggling of goods in and out of colonies. They taxed cloth, sugar, coffee, and wine coming into the colonies.

Townshend Act of 1767 -  

A British Act that taxed more things such as china, glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea imported to the colonies. These items were taxed because they were more difficult for the colonists to produce on their own. 3 years later it was repealed (taken back) in 1770 except for the tax on tea.

First Continental Congress (1774) - 

A Colonist act that was the meeting to figure out what is the best response to British Action. They met in Philadelphia with 12 of the 13 colonies represented (Not Georgia). The outcome was a trade ban with Great Britain in hopes that they would change their policies.

Stamp Act of 1765 -

 A British Act imposed a tax on every piece of paper that the colonists used. The tax was shown by a stamp on every paper

Boston Massacre of 1770 -

A British and Colonist Act - British troops opened fire on a crowd of protesters. Convinced colonists that the British would not hesitate to use force to make them obey the king’s laws.

Second Continental Congress (1775) -

A Colonist act that organized the Continental Army to resist the British. Called on colonies to send troops, where George Washington became selected leader of the Continental Army, and a year later (1776) they drafted the Declaration of Independence.

Quartering Act of 1765 -

A British Act that moved British troops from the west into cities. Required colonists (innkeepers and public officials) to house and feed British soldiers

Committees of Correspondence (1773-1775) -

 A Colonist Act - An independent and voluntary group that made sure that every colony knew about the events and opinions of every other colony.

Sons and Daughters of Liberty -

 A Colonist Act that tried to show resistance against British Laws. Sons were more violent resistance at times. Daughters: Spun their own yarn and made their own linen to avoid buying British Products

Tea Act of 1773 -  

A British Act that gave the East India Company the sole right to sell tea to the colonies. They were the only company that could sell the tea in the 13 colonies. The purpose was to prevent them from going broke, benefiting the economy of Britain.
