What is the theory of evolution?
States that all life on this Earth has one (or few) common ancestor(s) the existed a long time ago.
They believed differences in offspring helped the organism survive and continue to reproduce...eventually changing into other types of organisms.
Define extinct.
The organism was once living and now does not live on this earth.
What is atomic decay?
A process used to attempt to determine how old an object is.
What is the geological column?
A theoretical picture in which layers of the rock fro around the world are meshed together into a single, unbroken record of the Earth's past.
There is no place on earth where all the layers of the geological column exist complete with their index fossils.
True or false? Hundreds of species of animals become extinct each year.
In the last 400 years only about 1,100 species are thought to be extinct.
What is an isotope?
An atom that occurs in several forms.
Describe the uniformitarian view (of the Grand Canyon) versus the catastrophist perspective.
The uniformitarian believe that the same processes we observe today are responsible for forming most of the geological features of Earth while catastrophists believe much of the geology we see today is the result of processes that occurred once in the Earth's past and will not be repeated.
What fossils are in the lowest strata in the geological column?
Algae and bacteria.
What are radioactive atoms?
What is an example of one?
A type of heavier, unstable atoms.
Uranium.
Name 1 of the 8 answers in OYO 6.11 on page 181.
What are the 4 notable features of the fossil record?
1. Most fossils are found in sedimentary rock.
2. The vast majority of all fossils on this planet are of hard-shelled organisms, like clams.
3.It contains the remains of some organisms still living today.
4. The fossils found in one layer of stratified rock can be considerably different from the fossils found in another layer of stratified rock.
Is the geological column accurate? why or why not?
No it is a theoretical construct and doesn't exist in its entirety anywhere on Earth.
It only shows a small subset of actually what is found on earth (I.e. hard-shelled creatures like clams).
It also is not completely accurate because fossil evidence shows that the lower layers are not an accurate representation of Earth's history. This is because fossils in the Cambrian rock have been found that should not exist in rock older than Ordovician or Silurian.
What are the 3 fossil groups according to catastrophic view.
1. Creatures living before Flood.
2. Creatures living during time of flood.
3. Creatures living after flood.
Name any three time periods in the geological column.
Precambrian, Cambrian, Triassic, Jurassic etc.
See page 177.
Look at Figure 6.24 on page 173. Which perspective does it support and why?
It supports the catastrophic perspective because many feet of stratified rock was formed just 5 hours Mt. St. Helen's erupted.
What are the 4 distinct rock groups according to the fossil record from a catastrophic point of view.
4.Sedimentray and Igneous rocks from post-flood catastrophes.
3. Sedimentary rocks from flood.
2. Local pre-flood catastrophes.
1.Creation and sedimentary rocks before the flood.
