The two-part Catholic response to why Jesus was referred to as “first born” in Luke 2:7 does not disprove Mary's virginity.
What are 1.The term “firstborn” was a legal term in ancient Israel that applied to the child who “opened the womb.” It applied to that child regardless of whether or not the mother had any more children. 2. Two scriptural parallels between the Ark of the Old Covenant and Mary, Ark of the New
Luke describes Mary’s decision to visit Elizabeth in terms similar to the account of David’s decision to move the Ark to Jerusalem in 2 Samuel (2 Sam 6:2; Lk 1:56).
John the Baptist leaps in his mother’s womb when Mary visits, just like David leaped and danced before the Ark (2 Sam 6:14–16; Lk 1:41–43).
Elizabeth cries out, “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” echoing David’s words when he realized the great privilege of having the Ark go to him (2 Sam 6:9; Lk 1:41–43).
Mary stays with Elizabeth for about three months, just like the Ark stayed with Obed-edom for three months (2 Sam 6:11; Lk 1:56).
Furthermore, Luke says that Elizabeth “exclaimed with a loud cry” when she expressed her joy at Mary’s arrival, using a Greek word found nowhere else in the New Testament. However, it’s found five times in the Greek translation of the Old Testament, each time showing up in connection with the Ark of the Covenant (Lk 1:42).
Finally, Elizabeth was a Levite, so by lifting up her voice in praise of God, who was contained within Mary, she did what her priestly ancestors did when they praised God present in the Ark (see Lk 1:5).
