How did the changing seasons affect the daily lives and activities of the Inuit?
In the summer, the Inuit hunted caribou, seals and walrus. They lived in tents and travelled by foot, kayaks, and umiaks (open boats built with wooden frames covered in hide).
In the winter, the Inuit ice-fished and hunted beaver. They lived in Igloos or driftwood turf homes as temporary winter housing and travelled by foot or dog sled.

The Three Sisters is a practice where corn, beans and squash are planted together. The cornstalk acts as a trellis for the beanstalk to climb. The beanstalk roots secure the cornstalk against heavy winds. The giant leaves of the squash plants help shade the corn and bean plants and keep the area moist and free of weeds.

The Haudenosaunee followed a clan system with a matrilineal structure. The women were the Clan Mother and head of the Longhouse. All children called their birth mother and their mother's sisters "mother" and referred to one another as brother or sister. When a son married, he would move into his wife's longhouse.

Nipissing First Nations is our local First Nations. They are a part of the Anishinaabe, a group of culturally related Indigenous peoples in the Great Lakes region of Canada and the United States. Other member First Nations include Ojibwe, Odawa, Potawatomi, Mississaugas, and Algonquin peoples.
