A student places an ice cube in a metal bowl and leaves it in a warm room. After 10 minutes, the ice cube has completely melted into water.

Explain what happens to the particles in the ice as it changes from a solid to a liquid. In your answer, describe:

    •    How the movement of the particles changes

    •    How the arrangement of the particles changes

    •    What role heat energy plays in this process

When the ice melts, the particles change from being in a solid state to a liquid state.

In the solid (ice), the particles are tightly packed together in a fixed, regular arrangement. They cannot move around freely but can only vibrate in place.

As the ice is heated, it absorbs heat energy from the surroundings. This energy is transferred to the particles, causing them to gain energy and vibrate more quickly.

Eventually, the particles have enough energy to overcome the forces holding them in their fixed positions. The structure breaks down, and the ice melts into liquid water.

In the liquid state, the particles are still close together, but they are no longer in a fixed arrangement. They can move and slide past each other, which is why liquids can flow.

When ice melts into water, its volume decreases but its mass stays the same,Why does the volume change even though no particles are lost?

Because when ice melts, the particles stay the same but their arrangement changes.

In ice, the particles are held in a fixed structure with gaps between them. When it melts into water, the particles can move around and slide closer together, so those gaps mostly disappear.

So, the volume decreases even though the number of particles (mass) stays the same.
