Some critics called Impressionist paintings unfinished and worse than the scribbling of children. Others saw "amusing brushstrokes" and great talent. They reacted this way because at the time Impressionism was new and shocking.

The Nazis called modern art degenerate art. They collected many pieces of modern art and hung them in a show called “Degenerate Art” to humiliate the artists and discourage anyone else from making modern art. Part of the reason they hated modern art is because it showed the horror of war, which the Nazis were trying to glorify.
