Friction causes a change in velocity. True or False?

What is true?

100

This scenario would result in the object accelerating to the left.

a. 10 N to the left and 20 N to the right

b. 20 N to the left and 10 N to the right

c. 20 N to the left and 20 N to the right

What is answer b?

20 N to the left and 10 N to the right

100
SI unit for force
What is a Newton (N)
100

If the mass of an object increases, so does the ____________ of the object. In fact, it increases linearly in a straight line meaning it's proportional according to our investigation.

What is kinetic energy?

100
A push or a pull
What is Force?
200

The direction that friction works

What is against the direction of movement?

200

This scenario would result in no acceleration on a person.

a. 10 N to the left and 20 N to the right

b. 20 N to the left and 10 N to the right

c. 20 N to the left and 20 N to the right

What is answer C?

20 N to the left and 20 N to the right

200
SI unit for mass
What is kilogram (or gram)?
200

Balanced or Unbalanced?

A book sitting on a desk

What is balanced?

200

This science term is affected by both mass and velocity and have a relationship such that when one increases so does the other.

What is kinetic energy?

300

An icy surface would have more or less friction?

What is less friction?
300

Newton's second Law states that this depends on an objects mass and the forces acting on it

What is Acceleration?

300
SI unit for acceleration
What is m/s/s?
300

Balanced or Unbalanced?

A falling apple

What is unbalanced?

In a roller coaster ride this is where the most potential energy would be:

a.  As it edges down over the highest hill

b. In the middle of a loop

c.  at the end of the ride

What is the middle of the loop?

The roller coaster has potential energy only on a loop because the energy transformation occurs at the highest point of the ride, before the loop. At this point, the coaster is at its maximum height, storing gravitational potential energy. As the coaster descends, this potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion. The loop, however, does not provide a new source of potential energy; instead, it uses the kinetic energy to create centripetal acceleration, keeping the coaster moving along the circular path.

Two factors that influence friction are how hard the surfaces are pushing together and this.

What is Type of Surface?

400

Newton's third Law states that for every action force there is an equal but opposite reaction force.  We've also learned that mass and velocity are factors when it comes to force. What have you studied this unit that demonstrates this law very well?

What is the phenomena where the less massive space pod hit more massive space station?

When they collided the forces acting on them were the same (equal) and opposite (that's why the pod changed direction) but the space station was so massive that it didn't move backward as much as the pod did.

400

SI unit for velocity

What is m/s with a direction included?

400

Balanced or unbalanced?

The earth spinning at constant speed of 1,037 miles per hour.

What is balanced?

A car is driving down the road. Not including hitting the brakes, these three factors could cause a car to slow down.

What are friction between the road and the wheels, friction between the air and the car (air resistance), and friction between other parts of the car like axles and wheels?

500

If a woman is pushing a cart to the right then friction is acting in this direction.

What is to the left?

500

Force and energy are directly related.  This means if you increase the energy on an object and leave the mass the same, then you will also increase this.

What is the force?

500

If a book has 20 N of normal force pushing up from the table and 20 N of gravitational force pushing down on it, this is the net force on the book.

What is 0 Newtons?

500

Balanced or Unbalanced?

Applying the brakes on a bicycle, where the braking force is greater than the force of motion, causing the bike to slow down.

What is unbalanced?

500

A team of oxen pull their 60 kg tiller along a flat surface at a constant velocity with a force of 500 N. Neglect frictional effects caused by air resistance.

Which statements could be true?

A. The net force acting on the tiller is 500 N.

B. There is no net force acting on the tiller.

C. The tiller will accelerate as the oxen continue to pull with 500 N.

D. The frictional force between the tiller and the ground is 500 N.

What are  answers b and d?

There is no net force acting on the tiller.

The frictional force between the tiller and the ground is 500 N.
