Both were waiting to see the Messiah before they died, both were spending day and night preparing their hearts. They knew immediately upon Jesus' entering that the time had come.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph traveled to the Temple for Passover. On the journey home Mary and Joseph both realized that the other did not have Jesus. They traveled back and found him 3 days later with the elders and scholars in the Temple. Jesus asked why they would be looking for him when they should have known he would be in His Father's house.
