Atom
A systematic plan, often and graphical form, for the construction of something
Design
The clearing, by burning or logging, of trees in a forested area.
Deforestation
The basic unit of all living things
Cell
Two or more atoms joined together
Molecule
A process that changes substances into new substances
Chemical change
The step in the engineer process where the design is tried and data collected
Test
The slow warming of Earth's atmosphere due to climatic change
Global warming
The process in which plants and some other organisms use the energy and sunlight to make food
Photosynthesis
The substance that dissolves another substance
Solvent
A word describing a substance that will break down another substance upon contact.
Corrosive
A designer whose job it is to plan, develop, draw, and supervise the construction of buildings
Architect
What does it mean for a species to be endangered?
An endangered species has a population that is so small that it may not be able to produce enough offspring to survive.
The boundary that surrounds the cell and controls which substances can enter or leave the cell.
Cell membrane
The many different types of life that exist in an environment
Biodiversity
How do the particles in matter change when they are heated?
When thermal energy is added to matter, the particles of said matter begin to vibrate and move to a greater extent eventually moving farther apart from other particles of said matter.
How are buildings designed to meet people's needs? Give examples for at least 3 needs
People need shelter from the elements. We also need places for bathing, cooking, dining, exercising, and relaxing, as well as working at our jobs in business and industry. Each type of building is designed to meet a different set of needs. Ex school – students to learn. Factory – to build products. Home – for families to live together Restaurants - the feed patrons etc (given answers must be applicable)
Name, and describe each of the four levels of organization of living things within an ecosystem.
Organism - Any living thing
Population - the group of organisms of the same species living in the same area
Community - a group of different populations that live together and interact in an environment.
Ecosystem - - The living and nonliving things in their environment and their interactions with each other and their environment.
Why is cellular respiration important?
During cellular respiration, a cell obtains energy from glucose and oxygen. the cell then uses this energy to carry out different life processes.
What is the 10% rule?
Each time an organism is consumed, only about 10% of its total energy is transferred to the consumer. the other 90% of energy is converted into thermal energy.
How are chemicals both helpful and harmful to us and our world?
Explain AND give an example that is both harmful & helpful (Could use any of the synthetics we researched)
Open ended - should discuss at least one of the synthetic chemicals we examined in class: Artificial sweeteners, Nylon, Plastic, Yellow 5
How does the natural environment affect the design of the building? Give examples
Engineers and architects that designed buildings must take into account the possible damages the environment might cost to a building, and also think about the impact a building has on its surrounding environment. Structural, reinforcement, and parts that act like springs in the foundation can help a building withstand earthquakes. Thick insulation in the attic and outer walls can help the building keep warm and cooled weather and cool and hot weather. A well built, waterproof roof can prevent water from rain storms or snowmelt from seeping into the building.
How are remote sensing and ground truthing methods useful?
Remote, sensing methods, such as satellite analysis of earths surface, help scientists, understand land, use on a global scale. Satellites allow scientist to capture images of the same places, over long periods of time, and enabling them to observe how the land is changing. This helps them see potential problems and try to prevent them. Ground truthing is a way of verifying what remote sensing methods tell us.
What are the reactants and products of cellular respiration?
Oxygen enters a cell and reacts with glucose in the cell. These are reactants of cellular respiration. When glucose is broken down, it releases energy. Carbon dioxide and water are also produced. So, energy, carbon dioxide, and water are the products of cellular respiration
Why is the sun an important source of energy for all living things?
The sun continuously supplies energy into nearly every ecosystem on Earth. producers store the energy in matter. Energy and matter are transferred from producers to consumers, from consumers to other consumers and then to decomposers, and from decomposers to other organisms in a cycle. In this cycle, matter and energy are conserved. However, much energy is lost into the environment every time an energy transfer between organisms occurs.
