What is an observation?
What is the IV?
the independent variable is the variable that is changed on purpose. You can only have 1!
10
What are the base units for the following measurements?
Length: Meter
Mass: Grams
Temperature: Celsius
Volume: Liters
What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data?
Quantitative= Number data like 15 ml, 85 drops, ect.
Qualitative= descriptive data like it was pink, it was wilting, ect.
What is the DV?
The dependent variable is the measurable and observable outcome. You can have as many as you want!
Make one observation about something in the classroom and then make an inference about that observation.
Example: There is a lot of pink items in the room. Ms. Ruggery's favorite color must be pink.
Name the metric prefixes and abbreviations in order from large to small
Kilo, hecto, deka, base, deci, centi, milli
k, h, da, base (g, m, l), d, c, m
What tool(s) do we use to measure length?
Ruler or meter stick
What is the formula for the volume of a solid?
Length X Width X Height
What is a control?
This is part of the levels of IV that is used as our comparison to make sure that our outcomes are due to the IV.
What are the levels of IV? Give examples
they are the conditions that are changed like different types of detergent like tide, bleach, gain, and plain water
Convert 720,000 cL to hL
72 hL
What is the line that you read the water at on a graduated cylinder?
Meniscus
What is the boiling and freezing points of water?
100 oC = boiling
0oC = freezing
What are the steps of the scientific method?
Identify the question, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Collect and Analyze Data, Conclusion
Taylor wanted to know which type of gum students prefer so she could make sure teachers had this type of gum stocked in their classrooms. Taylor created a survey to ask each of the students in the 7th grade. Her results are in the data table. What was her levels of IV?
Orbit, trident, stride, mentos, and juicy fruit
Use the ladder method to convert 0.05 kg to mg
50,000mg
What method is used to find the volume of an irregular solid? Explain.
Water Displacement.
Take a known amount of water and write the number down, add your object, measure the water line now. Subtract the two numbers to get your volume!
1cm3=1 mL
Precision vs. accuracy
Precision= how close measurements are to one another
Accuracy= how close to the accepted or true value
Why do we use the scientific method as scientists?
To make sure we are organized and others are able to follow along and repeat our experiments. It also helps others understand how and where we got our data and why. This also keeps the experiment valid by following a process.
What are constants and why do we need them in an experiment?
They are items that must stay the same in the experiment and we need them to keep the experiment valid so we are only changing 1 thing.
What is the mean, median, and mode of this set of data:
3,5,5,7,9,9,9,12,15,17,19
Mean: 10 (add up and divide by the # of numbers)
Median: 9
Mode: 9 "Most found in the set of data"
What are mass and weight? What would happen with both of these if you go to the moon?
Mass= amount of matter in an object
weight= amount/force of gravity pulling/pushing down
Mass stays the same on moon, but weight will go down.
Draw a graph and label the parts
Need a title, x & Y axis labels, start at 0 and even scale
