A percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100.  If this ratio is equivalent to another ratio in a problem, you can often solve the problem by setting the ratios equal to each other and solving the equation.  This method can be used in problems that involve discounts, sales tax, simple interest, tips, commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, and percent error.
