Which German meteorologist hypothesized about continental drift in 1915?

Alfred Wegner

100

What type of plate boundary leads to the formation of volcanos?

Convergent boundary

100

Which atmospheric layer contains the ozone layer?

Stratosphere

100

Which organelle acts as the "powerhouse" for the eukaryotic cell and produces energy?

Mitochondria

100
What type of organism can produce its own energy?

Autotroph

200

Which type of plate boundary leads to earthquakes?

Transform boundary

200

What are the two main parts of every volcano?

Magma Chamber and Vents

200

Why does the ozone layer act like a shield?

Blocks / filters harmful UV radiation.

200

What are two main ways that material is transported through the cell membrane?

Active and passive transport

200

Which organelle is responsible for transporting material inside of a cell?

Vesicle

300

What is responsible for the movement of the lithospheric plates leading to continental drift?

Convection cells within the asthenosphere.

300

What is an island arc?

Long chain of volcanic islands found along oceanic to continental boundary lines.

300

What mixture of gases make up Earth's atmosphere?

Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon.

300

What are the three points of cell theory?

All living things are made up of one or more cells.

The cell is the most basic unit of structure and function of all living things.

All cells come from the other living cells.

300

What part of the cell is responsible for how the cell and the organism functions?

DNA

400

Which type of plate boundary leads to the formation of new oceanic crust?

Divergent boundary

400

What three main factors within magma determine if an eruption is explosive or non explosive?

Water, silica, and gas

400
What do chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) do to the ozone layer?

Break it down over time.

400

What type of transport is used to move water molecules through the cell membrane?

Osmosis (passive transport)
400

What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

Synthesizes and concentrates various substances needed by the cell.

500

How does the evidence of similar fossils being found on completely different continents such as South America and Africa support the theory of Pangea?

These two continents had to of either been connected or close by to each other to share the same type of fossil layers.

A volcano on the east coast recently erupted 10 years ago. Currently it has shown evidence of tremors and smoke rising from the main vent.

Is the volcano active, dormant, or extinct?

Dormant

500

Describe the ozone cycle -

O3 - ozone molecule absorbs harmful UV rays (radiation).

Once this happens the O3 molecule breaks down into O2 (oxygen gas) and O (single oxygen molecule).

This singular oxygen molecule then rebind's with another O2 (oxygen gas) molecule and forms a brand new O3 (ozone molecule).

The cycle repeats continuously.

500

Which organelle is responsible for producing proteins that is used within the cell?

Rough endoplasmic reticulum
500

What are the five characteristics of all living things?

Made up of cells

Obtain / use matter and energy

Grow and change

Reproduce

Respond to their environment
