Parts of the Brain
Teen Brain
Types of Psych and More!
100

This part of the brain is responsible for our emotions and is extremely sensitive during adolescence, so teens react to things much stronger and dramatically than adults.

Amygdala

100

This is a stage of one's life in between ages 13-19 where you're not a child anymore but you’re also not an adult yet.

Adolescence(Socially)

100

This is why we have the teen brain! It once helps us to take risks which is how we get things like better places to live and better/more food to eat. It’s also how we were encouraged to leave our families and find other people to make families with, encouraging reproductive fitness. It’s how we were able to develop and survive as a species.

Evolutionary Advantage

200

This part of the brain is the reward center. It's designed to make us continue doing certain things. During its development in adolescence it becomes extremely sensitive to peer approval rather than parental approval.

Striatum

200

This is a stage of biological development during your teen years when your brain is changing from a child’s brain to an adult’s brain.

Adolescence(biologically)

200

This type of psychology would be interested in the teen brain because it focuses on how we grow and develop throughout life, and adolescence is a big part of that.

 Developmental Psychology

300

This part of the brain goes through myelinization, it creates insulation to help us process information faster. This is why we’re able to bring up things from a long time ago or quickly recognize and point out parts of a situation.

Myelin Sheath

300

These can get rocky and hard to keep up with because of how sensitive we are to the things people do and say. We can start to drift away from people especially our parents purely because of how different our brains are working.

Adolescent affects on relationships

300

This type of psychology would be interested in the teen brain because it studies the cognitive, social, and emotional processes involved in learning, and school is a huge part of a teens life and we experience it a lot differently than other age groups in school.

Educational Psychology

400

This part of the brain goes through synaptic pruning to get rid of the information we no longer need. It also goes through the transition of grey matter to white matter. It develops front to back so our prefrontal cortex develops last, so we lack long term thinking and decision making.

Cerebral Cortex

400

We can have trouble keeping up with these things and committing to them because we’re so sensitive and tired a lot of the time, but we may be more motivated to keep up with them as well because we are sensitive to rewards like money.

Adolescent effects on school and employment

400

This type of psychology would be interested in the teen brain because they could see how differently teens experience the health system and how differently they are treated from children and adults in the healthcare system.

Health Psychology

500

This part of the brain is the last to develop and is responsible for long term thinking, decision making, and social interaction. Since it doesn’t develop until our twenties we lack the rational thinking of an adult. This is why teens tend to make such bad decisions.

Prefrontal Cortex

500

We make a lot of bad decisions because of the way our brains are developing, but this gives us many opportunities to learn and grow!

 Adolescents affect on personal growth

500

These changes often make me more irritable, anxious, and emotional than I would like to be but it’s also made me really observant of other people which can be helpful from time to time, honestly it’s not that bad.
