When is it okay to tease someone?

When you are playing a game, joking around, when everyone is having fun.

This is an opinion. Jack's feelings about cake are specific to him, and depend on how much he likes the taste of the cake.

Someone is touching your lunch box and you don't like that.

You do not need to tell anyone this. You can ask them to stop touching it and/or move away from them.

What is telling?

Telling is reporting what others are doing when it is necessary to do so. Telling keeps other people and ourselves safe. You should tell someone about dangerous, harmful, or destructive behaviour.

When you don't know them well, when you are not joking around, when you are working, when everyone is not having fun.

This is a fact. Whether Jessah think they do or don't grow in the ground, it is true that carrots grow in the ground. This can be tested and has evidence to support it.

Your peer stole your lunch from you at school. 

You should tell someone. You can ask for it back, but you need to get your lunch back so you can tell someone (teacher, parent, etc.) your lunch was stolen.

What is tattling?

Tattling is reporting minor, safe, and solvable issues to get someone in trouble. Tattling is not necessary, and is not done to keep others safe. Tattling can be bringing issues up to teachers about other students, when it is the teachers job to worry about it.

I think everyone should have to drink milk everyday because it is good for your bones. 

This is an opinion, based on a fact. Even though it's using information that is factual, it is still someone's opinion that other's should HAVE to drink it, even though it is based on the fact that milk helps strengthen your bones.

Your friend left something out where they should not have, or made a mistake in the classroom.

You do not need to tell anyone, other's are responsible for themselves, and it is the teacher's job to say something if they choose to.

Stacy reported to the teacher that she heard other students saying they forgot to bring their homework to school today.

This would be tattling. Stacy did not need to tell the teacher this, it is the teacher's job to worry about those student's homework. This was not said to keep anyone safe.

What is an opinion?

An opinion is a view or judgement about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Opinions are subjective, meaning they are based on the person who thinks/says the thought or has the opinion. Opinions cannot be proven and they are not necessarily true or always correct or incorrect.

Your friend is in the bathroom crying because their stomach really hurts.

You should tell the teacher or a safe adult. This requires outside help, we always help our friends when we can, and adults need to know when someone is in pain or not okay.

This would be telling. George should tell the teacher because this will keep his friend safer, as he should always tell a safe adult if someone gets hurt. The teacher needs to know this.

If they are not having fun, if they are crying or becoming upset, if they are not laughing, if they tell you to stop, if they are not teasing you back.

What is a fact?

A fact is something that is known or proven to be true. Facts are true no matter who thinks about them, or whether other's think it is true or not. Facts have evidence and can be found true when tested by many different people.

You overhear that two peers are going to have a fight outside at the playground after school because they are angry at each other. 

You should tell someone. You should tell a teacher or safe adult because other's could be engaging in a dangerous activity and/or get hurt. We must always report violence or plans for violence to safe adults (parents/guardians, teachers, etc.). You can never ben too careful with violence and threats of violence.

Kaylee sees two students arguing over the rules of a game. She overhears one of them say that they should fist-fight after school to settle the issue. Kaylee reports this to the teacher.

This would be telling. Kaylee should tell the teacher because this conversation could escalate and get worse. She should also tell because she overheard a threat about physically fighting. Telling the teacher can keep the students safe and it is necessary for the teacher to know.
