A contrast between what is expected and what actually happens
Irony
A poem that tells a story. These poems are normally longer than average as they contain all of the elements of a traditional story.
Example: The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
Narrative Poem
A statement that appears at first to be contradictory, but upon reflection then makes sense.
Example: "Youth is wasted on the young"
Paradox
an unexpected development in a story; a surprise!
Plot Twist
when the plot is interrupted to recreate an event of earlier time; often used to provide background information
Flashback
A phrase, expression or saying that is not meant literally but who has a figurative meaning. (Dichos)
Example: "Were in the same boat."
Idiom
A speech made by one person speaking his or her thoughts aloud or directly addressing the reader, audience, or character. It is common in dramas, animated cartoons, and films.
Example: The Seven Ages of Man by William Shakespeare.
Monologue
A figure of speech employed by writers to intentionally make a situation seem less important.
Example "It was ok"-said the student who got the highest score on the test.
Understatements
Certain plot elements or events that repeat themselves throughout a story.
Parallel Episodes
when a story begins with a brief look at the future, and then the reader gets to go back and find out how the characters got to that point.
Flash Forward
Something that represents something beyond itself in literature.
example: a tree represents life
Symbolism
a poem that expresses the poet's strong emotions or feelings. The poem is often short and musical and can use poetic devices like Rhyme and meter.
Example: My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke
Lyrical Poem
an ironic remark, somewhat rooted in humor, that is intended to mock or satirize something. (usually is mean)
Example: "Zombies eat brains....so your safe."
Sarcasm
A love story involving three characters. Typically two of the characters are both in love with the third person.
Love Triangle
The author breaks the narrative to show what a character is dreaming; used to reveal more about a character.
Dream Sequence
a reference to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, history, movies, of the arts.
Example: My uncle Tony is such a Grinch! He hates Christmas.
Allusion
14-line poems that follow a strict rhyme scheme and conform to the metrical pattern of iambic pentameter.
Example: 116 by William Shakespeare
Sonnet
a literary device that is also known as a 'play on words'. Words with a similar or identical sound but with different meanings.
Example: a financial group named "Common Cents"
Pun
An un-resolved ending. Usually leaving the main characters dangling at the climax of the story.
Cliff Hanger
Hints or clues suggesting what may happen later in a story.
Foreshadowing
