How many different kinds of atoms does an element contain?
ONE
100
What do you call the center of an atom AND what particles are found in the center?
Nucleus, protons and neutrons are found inside

Inherited diseases or characteristics are caused or controlled by ____________
Genes!
100
What is the difference between extinct and endangered?
Extinct is completely gone. The organism does not exist. Endangered is an organism that is at risk of going extinct.

Give an example of a species we studied that has changed over time (evolved) and what changes occurred in the species.
Giraffes – their necks became taller/ Elephants – their trunks became longer/ Finch Birds – beak shape changed/ Whales – land mammal to aquatic mammal
300
What is a chemical bond?
The force that holds atoms together in a molecule/compound
300
What does the Atomic Number tell us?
The number of Protons in the nucleus (and we can also use it to find the number of electrons as well!)
300
TRUE or FALSE: Evidence tells us that humans have had an impact on global temperatures and global climate
TRUE

Must answer all parts to get the question correct! How are each of the following influenced by both genes AND the environment? Height/ Hair Color/ Heart Disease
Height is controlled by genes, but sports or malnutrition can stunt your growth/ Heart disease can be genetic, but can also be caused by lifestyle choices (eating unhealthy, etc.)/ Your natural hair color is genetic, but you can dye your hair different colors
300
What gives rise to genetic variation within a population AND can cause new plant and animal species to develop and evolve?
Mutations (change in DNA)
400
What makes up a compound?
Two or more different atoms bonded together
400
What does the Atomic Mass tell us?
It tells us the number of protons PLUS neutrons in the nucleus
400
What is the main way that ocean currents affect climate?
By transferring heat around the globe!
400
A genetic disease is represented by the letter T. How would you represent the recessive condition of the disease?
tt
400
What is evolution and how does it occur?
Evolution is the gradual change in the genetic makeup of an entire species over a very long period of time. Small genetic changes occur (variation by mutations) that give the organism an advantage or disadvantage that is selected for over time (natural selection). This process of natural selection causes adaptations and eventually a new species is formed (speciation).
500
How do you figure out the number of NEUTRONS in an atom?
You subtract the number of protons (atomic number) from the Atomic Mass (which is neutrons + protons)
500
DAILY DOUBLE!!!!! Must get all three parts to win!!! For Silver (Ag).... How many electrons are there? How many protons are there? How many neutrons are there?
For Silver (Ag).... 47 Electrons! 47 Protons! And..... 61 Neutrons!!

List a minimum of THREE traits that are NOT influenced by genes.
Accent, Religion, Language, Dialect,
500
What are the four steps of natural selection?
1. Variation of genes within a species occurs naturally. 2. Organisms must compete for limited resources within an environment to survive. 3. The individuals with genetic traits that will help them survive better in their current environment survive and reproduce more often than others without the traits do. 4. As a result, the genes and traits that are most common in a population can change through many, many generations.
