Provides the reader with step by step instructions on an event or topic (ex: making a sandwich)
How-To Article
usually an image that is hand drawn to help the reader make sense of what they're reading.
Illustration
A title that appears several times throughout a passage that helps organize information.
A subheading or subtitle

Flow Chart
The 3 devices authors will use to persuade the reader. Used often in advertisments.
Ethos, Pathos and Logos
Usually addressed to someone you don't know personally and has a very formal tone.
Business Letter
Visual representation of data that is intended to clarify information. Can be in pie form or vertical bars.
A Graph
Something an author uses to support his point. Can be proven. Sometimes contains numbers or percentages. Is the opposite of an opinion.
Fact
Shows the parts that make up the whole of something and is presented in a circular format.
Pie Chart
What the reader needs from the article to support an answer.
Evidence
Contains "links" or connections to other pages within a site or links to other sites.
Web Page
Serves to explain an object and usually contains many labels that point out it's parts.
Diagram
the most important idea of an article - usually contained in the first paragraph.
Main idea or Central Idea
Plots data with rectangles or columns
Bar Graph
An author will write this to tell about the article or passage in just a few sentences.
Summary
The author takes a clear opinion on a topic and builds up evidence to make a point.
Argumentative Essay
A representation, usually on a flat surface such as a sheet of paper, or a certain geographic area, showing various features like the compass rose.
Map
The author's last paragraph used to wrap up his writing.
