Fill in the blank:

Ms. C will say this towards the ending of class each day "If you stand up you better ....

Why does Ms. C say this?

"If you stand up you better sit right back down"

The bell does not dismiss you Ms. C does

When Copper and Acidic Acetate interact together, it produces Copper Acetate, which is a new substance. Label down below the reactant, product and new/ old substance.

Copper+ Acidic Acetate  —-------->  Copper Acetate

Copper+ Acidic Acetate: Reactant/ Old

Copper Acetate: Product/ New

Based on the experiment, the combination of the powdered drink and water in Flask #1 would it be considered a new substance, chemical reaction or mixture?

Mixture, no new substance was created because we were able to separate the powder drink mix from the water by boiling it.

When liquid water boils, the water undergoes a _______ change from ________  to ______, but it’s all still water. Electrolysis is a chemical reaction. The atoms in the water molecules rearrange to form separate hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.

- Phase

- Liquid

- Gas

What are the 4 rules Ms. C has in class?

1. Respectful

2. Responsible

3. Ready

4. Safe

Look at the symbols for magnesium, oxygen, and magnesium oxide. Use the following space to draw a model of what happened in this chemical reaction.

Magnesium: MG

Oxygen: O2, Magnesium oxide: 2MGO

What is the difference between a reactant and a product?

Reactant is when 2 or more substances are combines to react with each other.

Product is the end result or final product after the reaction had taken place.

400

What is the difference between a mixture and a chemical reaction?

One way to decide whether substances interacted to form a new substance or if they combined to make a mixture is to attempt to separate it back to its original substance. If a chemical reaction has occurred the substance cannot go back to its original state as the atoms have rearranged to form a new molecule.

Define: Phase Change

A phase change is when you still have the same substance, it just goes from one state of matter to another (solid, liquid, gas).

The drawing below shows a model developed to represent a molecule of copper acetate. Based on the model, what is the atomic composition of copper acetate? Fill in the blanks with the correct number of atoms.

_____ copper atom(s)  ______ oxygen atom(s)  ______ hydrogen atom(s)  ______  carbon atom(s)

1 Copper

4 Oxygen

6 Hydrogen

4 Carbon

A chemical reaction describes what is happening and how substances interact with each other in the form of symbols instead of words in sentences. What does each symbol and numbers represent in the molecular formula?

Example: 2MgO

Symbol: Represent element Mg= Magnesium

Numbers: Number and types of atoms that are in the reaction.

500

During a chemical reaction, how do you know a new substance is formed?

The properties of the substance will have changed; there will be a higher/lower density or melting point; it may no longer be soluble in certain liquids, or its color may have changed.
