A student walks into class visibly upset. The student is staying to themselves and isn't saying much but is still working. You ask them to participate in verbal discussion but they say no. At this point you begin to raise your voice and now a verbal altercation begins between you and the student. What could have been done differently?

Pull the student aside alone and ask them what they need to feel supported/call for assistance for the student.

Your class is preparing for a test next class. You give students a review packet and instead, students are chatting amongst each other and not reviewing the work you gave them. How can you engage students to be active in their studies to prepare for the exam?

Work with the students as a group to review correct answers through gamification.

A student comes to class and as they get to the door the bell rings. At this time, the student does not have a tardy pass. The student tells you they don't have a pass and they were right there and you immediately begin going back and forth with student. Instead of a power struggle between student and teacher, what can we do differently?

Give students grace and allow a student at your door when the bell rings in. If they are not there and they show up without a pass, send them to the TT. If they refuse, call for BST.

When students leave our classrooms, what should they have and what do they need to have on them?

Students should only be in the hallway with a pass that tells BST members exactly where they are going with a time stamp. Nurse passes are ONLY for the nurse. Bathroom passes are ONLY for the bathroom.

Sending the student to admin for assistance on next steps. But not making it a big classroom scene.

A student does not come to class with a chromebook or a pencil to do work. Is this classroom managed or BST managed?

Classroom managed.

We do NOT know student circumstances to why they are not prepared with materials needed. This is not a reason to dismiss a student from class. We as educators must always be ready to pivot and we should have paper work handy if needed.

A student was out of school for 2 weeks because someone close to them passed away in their family. During this time, they have missed multiple assignments and they are trying to catch up. While small groups are happening what can we do to assist this student?

Pull the student in a group with you (or a co-teacher) to help catch them up to speed. Please give grace and don't expect the student to just pick up where the rest of the class is.

Give students a break and allow students to regroup before working again. This allows students to refocus on work and avoid student-teacher conflict in the class.

Using the sign in and out sheets with proper times and they must be re-signed in upon their return.

You called for a BST advocate to reset a student and to speak with their admin or the dean of students. Between the admin team and the dean it has been decided the student will be returning to your classroom. When the student arrives, how should we greet them?

Allow student to return to learning with a welcoming energy. Trust that when BST brings them back the work has been done and they are ready to return. Please do not restart the situation with the student, allow them to come back in with a clean slate.

400

A student tells you your class is boring them and they are tired of doing only book work. How can you engage student buy in?

Student choice/voice. Allowing students to tell you how they work best and what interest them can guide your lesson plans to ensure that we are working with students in a way that best serves them.

You have a heavy ELD student population in your classroom and during work time students speak to each other in their native language. A non spanish-speaking student says they are talking about them because they are speaking in spanish, how do you approach this situation?

Tell students that speaking their native language is always acceptable and that just because people begin to speak another language around you does not mean that students are speaking ill about you. We never tell native speaking students that it is inappropriate to speak their native language.
