A civil rights activist. Known for her friendship with Malcolm X. There is an iconic picture in which she is trying to help Malcolm X right after he was shot by the assassins. She lived in New York City in a community that housed a lot of minorities, with mostly black and Puerto Rican neighbors. She often hosted open houses in her apartment with the Freedom riders, a group of civil rights activists that rode buses across the country into segregated areas, and offered a place to sleep to community activists. This person and her husband, William Kochiyama played a role in getting government reparations for the Japanese-Americans who were interned.
