You are running the first session of a brand new 18 month old client. The client walks into the barn and sits on the ground, what is the first thing you do?

Run a preference assessment or a variety of their preferred items in order to build rapport with the client and engage them in play.

You are in Playtown with your dyad and client 1 wants to play in the barn with marble run but client 2 refuses to leave the hospital, how do you keep them within the same treatment area?

Open answer however I am looking for:

Transitioning client 1 to the hospital by withholding marble run and utilizing it as a transition item, "first hospital, then we can play marble run." Clients can either engage in parallel play of different or same toy. Another option is finding client 2s most most preferred and engaging them in that item in the barn.

What is the term called for preventative/proactive strategies for a behavior? Provide one example of it and one negative effect.

Antecedent strategies. Examples include: priming, environmental sanitization, body positioning, timers, social stories, social scripts, role-play games, modeling appropriate behaviors, premack principle/ first-then statements, etc.

Negative effect: If we always utilize antecedent strategies to prevent behavior, we may never actually target the actual behavior or work on self-regulating strategies for this. It is very unnatural and the client may continue the behavior in the real world.

You are in a social skill group with your caterpillar dyad and another BT with their caterpillar triad. You guys are transitioning to the therapy room for play when your peer's client elopes. You are able transition all remaining four clients to the therapy room and it is your goal to engage them and gain all their attention, what do you do?

Open to answers.

Exaggerated speech/play/effects

My favorite one is to grab a closed bin/box, begin shaking it around and loudly saying "OOOOooo look what do I have?" This gains all the client's attention, I would then walk behind them to redirect them closer to the table to sit down. Once sitting I would begin to provide them with the items in the box (maybe it's cars, playdoh, etc.). If one of the four kiddos trail off it is okay for the moment while I wait for the other BT to return.
