What are Residents Rights?
Leave resident alone and attempt to give at a later time. Notify charge nurse if necessary.
What should staff do if a resident refuses a medication?
Leave alone and attempt later. Try different staff or wait to try later. Document attempts and interventions.
What action should be taken if a resident refuses to take a bath, brush teeth, or change clothes etc?
If the resident is able to understand reasoning for cares, explain and educate. If the resident continues to refuse, document and notify charge nurse. Other interventions will need to be put in place.
Should a resident be able to refuse cares if their health is at risk?
Upon admission to the nursing home.
When are residents and families informed of Resident's Rights?
Remove resident from unsafe situation. Notify supervisor and begin with investigation process.
How can a resident have the right to be free of abuse?
Reschedule Resident's bath to the preferred time of day.
What if a resident is scheduled to a take a bath at time that the resident does not prefer?
Intervene to make sure residents are safe, immediately tell your supervisor who will notify DON, SW and Administrator to begin investigation
What will staff do if they witness or hear of a resident being abused?
It is everyone's job.
Who is responsible to make sure resident's rights are protected?
Tell a staff person, social worker, file a grievance , contact the Ombudsman
What can resident's do if they feel their rights have been violated?
Search for missing items, complete Missing in Action form, facility may replace item if item was damaged or lost by facility staff.
What if a resident reports missing clothing/item?
Financial, sexual, physical, verbal and mental(emotional)
